Preface
I am considering all the novels, which adjusts my rankings quite a bit.
I personally read 3 volumes.
Review
Personally: 8/10
Generally: 7/10
This was my first time reading any of Yukito Ayatsuji's novels, and while it didn't disappoint, I wasn't blown away by the whole experience.
There was at least one point in each volume that struck me as well-written or important, but for the topic of these books, the slow pace and low stakes that make up the rest felt almost boring.
I'm not sure if there is a culture gap present here that could make me feel this way.
Altogether I am happy I spent my time reading these books, but I really had to use my imagination and intrinsic (slow) interest to make them enjoyable.
Spoilers
I understand why they changed the plot for the anime and the manga but the books (1+2) have the best plot by far. It just doesn't look as cool.
